The St. Paul Winter Music Festivals eclectic lineup of talent and its unique setting will make for a one-of-a-kind event in the Twin Cities. The clear-span tent is a heated venue with all support beams on the outside no poles obstructing the view. The tent will hold about 500 music fans, and food and beverages (including beer and wine) will be available. The Festival is presented by the Hot Springs Records production company, which provides production services to music events including the Twin Cities Jazz Festival (f/k/a Hot Summer Jazz Festival), Famous Daves BBQ & Blues Festival and the Uptown Row Django Jazz Fest.

God Johnson
God Johnson abides the gospel of rawk. Led by former Big Wu guitarist, songwriter and founding member Jason Fladager, God Johnsons (http://www.godjohnson.com/main.html) got funk on their side and tons of followers from jam band nation. For over two years, the group has held court on Wednesday nights at The Cabooze, creating one of those particularly defining residencies. The guitar, two keyboards, sax, bass and drums mix weave a funky web that has landed them opening slots with many national touring acts.

The White Iron Band ( http://www.whiteironband.com/) honed their honky-tonk chops on the cold turf of the Iron Range, building an outlaw reputation with their pedal steel flourishes, wicked guitars, excellent harmonies and take-no-prisoners approach to the drinking song. They had their own Thursday night residency at the 5 Corners Saloon, before putting in more time hitting the road and hitting Minnesota stages with the likes of Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Buckethead and Stonewall Jackson.

When Terry Evans performs his gospel-laced southern R&B, he casts a spell that no audience member can escape. His soulful, full-bodied vocals have graced albums and tours with the likes of maestro Ry Cooder and rock legend John Fogerty, as well as 70s singing partner Bobby King. As a front man, Evans takes you on a trip to his native Mississippi with charisma and depth that any performer would envy. Terry's versatility is simply amazing he goes from haunting, voodoo sorcerer to soul celebrator with spine-chilling bravado.

Brother To The Blues
Big Walter Smith has personified the blues in Minneapolis and St. Paul for over 30 years. His 300-pound presence and velveteen voice have graced almost every blues and R&B stage in the Twin Cities at one time or another, and he has been a mainstay of the popular Bayfront Blues Festival in Duluth since its inaugural year in 1989. He is so popular in Duluth that the mayor proclaimed August 8, 1997, to be "Big Walter Smith Day" in the city."

The life and music of rock-n-roll icon Janis Joplin explodes onto the stage in this new musical. Love, Janis goes behind the music and offers a glimpse at the soul of a legend both through the letters she wrote home and the songs she made famous. Classics like Me and Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart, and Mercedes Benz come to life in this hauntingly intimate portrayal inspired by the best-selling book by Laura Joplin.

Detroit Women are winners of Detroit Music Awards in 2004, 2005 and 2006. In 1985, Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Kate Hart put together Seattle Women, a revue style show featuring ten of the West Coast's finest blues singers. After several years with the group, Kate returned to her home of Detroit in 2002 and formed Detroit Women. This all-star group of Motor City female vocalists is backed by an equally all-star group the Motor City Express. The Women's collective experience includes performances with notables like Ike & Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Joe Cocker and Etta James. The seven vocalists have given roof raising performances in the US, Canada and Europe, and have made them a formidable entry in the long list of Detroit-based musical greats.

"BIG" George Jackson
Based in the Twin Cities, Big George Jackson is the authentic big man of the blues. Standing 6'6 tall, Big George's deep, commanding voice is reminiscent of greats like Muddy Waters. An outstanding harmonica player, Big George brings the rolling Chicago style blues with a taste of the Delta. His stage presence is as big as he is, and his four piece backing band is a fierce blues machine. Frequent tours of Europe have made George a big hit overseas.

Joey DeFrancesco is an undisputed leader in the revival of the popularity of the Hammond B-3 organs place in jazz. Hailing from Philadelphia, DeFrancesco started sitting in at gigs with his musician father by age six and was invited to the stand by the great B-3 artist Jack McDuff by age ten. Following his high school graduation in 1988, DeFrancesco went on tour as part of Miles Davis band and Mr. Davis was never known for suffering inferior musicians gladly, or at all. He appeared on two Miles Davis albums (Live Around the World and the acclaimed Amandla) before signing on to Columbia Records as a solo artist. In addition to his own outstanding solo efforts and his time with Miles, DeFrancesco has worked with guitarist John McLaughlin and his Hammond heroes Jimmy Smith and Brother Jack McDuff. Whether laying down soul-jazz grooves or hard bop /modal sounds, Joey is a virtuoso of the highest caliber. Joey DeFrancesco is sponsored by the Twin Cities Jazz Festival (formerly the Hot Summer Jazz Festival).

Ronny Loew
with the
Dan Kusz Band:
|
 |
| After nearly five years away from the music scene, Twin Cities jazz/funk saxophone star Ronny Loew returns for an appearance at the St. Paul Winter Music Festival. This Berklee grad built a huge fan base in the late 1990s, alternating between Twin Cities venues (leading his own band) and traveling the world as a sideman. His song list hits funky favorites like Earth, Wind & Fire and The Stylistics with Ronny's own groove-deep sound.
Still in his early 20s, saxophonist Dan Kusz has been a featured performer at the Dakota, the Twin Cities Jazz Festival and other top venues and events. His smooth jazz sound is infused with a richly soulful resonance. His debut CD Lost in the Groove was produced by Ricky Peterson, known for his road work for the likes of David Sanborn and John Mayer. Dan is a rising star in the contemporary jazz world.
